Dr Andrew Magee

Climate Scientist

Andrew is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Better understanding the link between climate variability and tropical cyclone behaviour is at the nexus of Andrew’s research interests. He has published widely on the link between ocean-atmosphere interactions and implications on tropical cyclone formation and development. Andrew has been engaged in a number of projects across Asia-Pacific focusing on quantifying tropical cyclone risk, natural peril and hazard risk modelling, stochastic weather generation and seasonal tropical cyclone forecasting. Dr Andrew (Drew) Lorrey

Principal Scientist - Climate and Environmental Applications

Drew joined the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in 2007 and has been involved in seasonal climate outlooks since that time. He formerly led the Island Climate Update between 2008-2013, developing the Multi-model Ensemble Tool for Pacific Islands (METPI). Drew has published several peer-reviewed papers on SW Pacific tropical cyclones and the South Pacific Convergence Zone. He actively collaborates with many Pacific Island National Meteorological Services through research projects focused on modern climate, historical climate and palaeoclimate. Since 2008, Drew has guided the development of an analog-based approach for SW Pacific TC seasonal outlooks using the Coupled ENSO Index that is supported by the NIWA Strategic Science Investment Fund.

Drew is collaborating with University of Newcastle colleagues on the research aspects of the TCO-SP, and how this guidance can be incorporated into regional tropical cyclone outlooks issued through the Island Climate Update during October each year.

Dr Anthony Kiem

Associate Professor Anthony Kiem - Hydroclimatology

Dr Anthony Kiem is a hydroclimatologist from the Centre for Water, Climate and Land (CWCL) at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Anthony’s research is focussed on understanding the drivers and impacts of climate variability and change in the Asia-Pacific region. Of particular interest are hydrological extremes and how these may change in the future. Anthony has extensive experience in characterising impacts of climate variability and change, seasonal/interannual forecasting, extreme event (e.g. flood, drought, bushfire etc.) risk analysis, hydrological modelling, stochastic modelling, and water resources management.
